Suggestions for Activities

We hope that this website will stimulate your thinking about ways in which you can follow The Aldhelm Way in 2005. As activities get underway in our parishes, benefices and schools, we hope that information about these initiatives and local stories will be shared in the Sarum Link and on our website www.TheAldhelmWay.org.uk. We are also making contact with parishes outside our diocese that share the Aldhelm dedication and inviting them to join in our celebrations.

Prayer underpins all our preparations and celebrations based on the two major themes of Evangelism and Pilgrimage - following The Aldhelm Way of going outside the church walls and preaching the Gospel. Here are some suggestions for individual and group activities

  • an individual spiritual pilgrimage using the Aldhelm Way CD
  • a prayer pilgrimage in a church or garden with an open invitation to join in
  • a pilgrimage around your parish, benefice or deanery
  • an individual or group pilgrimage, walking all or part of The Aldhelm Way route during the pilgrimage week from 30th May to 4th June or on another occasion
  • hold events, meetings or services in open spaces, pubs, cafés or your local supermarket!
  • celebrate local links – ecumenical, business, environmental
  • open a café or lunch club with ecumenical partners or other community groups
  • run children’s activities for the community during the school holidays
  • start an enquirers’ group, breakfast group or similar forum outside the church environment

Above all, share your news and stories with others!

Schools' Materials in this resource pack have been designed as a ‘starting point’ for any work on St. Aldhelm. They can be utilised as stand-alone activities. However, they may also be used as a progressive programme of study and, indeed, pupils and teachers will gain the most by following this approach. This will give a better understanding of the historical character and how his teachings impacted on those around him for many years.

There is a cross curricular approach to the material and teachers will find elements of religious education, history, PHSE, citizenship, art and music. They also draw on a variety of text styles and may contribute to the literacy strategy in an exciting way by exploring this fascinating saint.

All materials are copyright free and so lend themselves to a myriad of uses by selecting images, text and activities to enable teachers to develop their own lesson plans as appropriate to age and ability of pupils.
