The
4th June Event Information. Arrangements
for the Celebration Event on Saturday 4th June and the Aldhelm Way Pilgrimage
- 28th May to 4th June Come and join the walk from Corfe Castle and the outdoor event on 4th June as we celebrate the 1300th anniversary of St Aldhelm's consecration as Bishop of Sherborne. We will be joined by the Archbishop of Canterbury who will begin his visit with the consecration of a new altar at St Aldhelm's Chapel at 3.00pm. Because the chapel is small, attendance will be limited to local residents. The main event begins at 4.00pm with the Archbishop speaking, joined by our bishops. Do arrive early at the event site - any time from 12.30pm onwards - and enjoy a huge outdoor picnic with music, singing, bands and children's activities. The event site is by Renscombe Farm, Worth Matravers, not the Chapel at St Aldhelm's Head. For those wishing to join the pilgrimage on 4th June, The Aldhelm Way pilgrimage route begins in West Street, Corfe Castle from either St Edward the Martyr Church (which is holding a flower festival with refreshments that weekend) or the West Street Car Park. The route will be signed and there are separate directions with these notes. Additional parking has been provided for those who wish to walk to the event site. Parking is also available at the event site and we expect that the majority will want to arrange to park there. The Walk The distance from Corfe Castle to the event site is 3.5 miles with an uphill stretch. The Pilgrim Group will leave from St Edward the Martyr, West Street at 10.15am after prayers. We expect that parish groups will want to arrange their own timings and hope that as many as possible will want to arrive for lunch and the full afternoon programme. The latest arrival time should be 3.30pm to allow for a practice of the music before the 'Event' begins. Transport There are restrictions on the use of transport in Corfe Castle, Worth Matravers and at the event site itself. Parking at these locations is only available for cars, minibuses and 'coaches' with a maximum of 35 seats (known in the trade as 'midi' size). Larger capacity coaches will not be able to gain access to Worth Matravers or the event site. There will be a small charge for parking.
Parking Maps showing locations of parking in Corfe Castle and at the event site are with these notes. Some walkers might wish to walk from Corfe Castle to the event site and walk back at the end of the day. For those who only wish to join in the walk to the event site, we strongly advise you to arrange to be 'dropped off' at Corfe Castle so that your transport can park at the event site. Traffic around Worth Matravers will be controlled by the Police. At the end of the event the flow of traffic will be away from the event site and Worth Matravers and access to the site will be restricted. THE CAR PARK WILL CLOSE AT 7.00PM. Refreshments and Entertainment at the Event Site Food, Hog Roasts, teas, ice creams and drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) will be available for purchase from outlets from 12.30pm onwards. A varied programme of musical entertainment will run from 1.40pm along with a range of children's activities. The 'Event' The outdoor celebration with the Archbishop of Canterbury will last from 4.00 to 4.45pm. The Archbishop will then spend time talking with people until about 5.30pm after which the main departure will begin. This may take some time as there will only be one route out of Worth Matravers and you are advised to plan accordingly! Tell us if you're coming to join us... It is important that we have some idea of the numbers coming along on 4th June, so parishes are asked to send us an estimate of numbers in parish groups by 23rd May. Please use the reply slip with these notes (click here for the word document or here for the PDF file to print) telephone 01722 411955
