Aldhelm was an evangelist who used music, humour and riddles to encourage people to take their faith more seriously and discover God in their lives. The story goes that he would go to the bridge in town, play on his harp and draw a crowd to whom he then preached the Gospel. As we look into his life and times, it becomes obvious that, despite the passing of 1300 years, there are strong similarities with our own day. When Aldhelm was alive not everyone by any means was involved with church life and would call themselves Christian, and so it is today. As a way of celebrating this anniversary, we have challenged all the churches, parishes and benefices in the Diocese of Salisbury to do something The Aldhelm Way in 2005. That is, to do at least one thing outside the church walls, one evangelistic event. You can, of course, do more than one thing and we hope that whatever you do might become a continuing activity! But we encourage you all to take a risk by bringing the Gospel to people, or indeed to discover that other people beyond the Church are already thinking of God and are willing to talk about Him. A number of central diocesan events have been organised to celebrate The Aldhelm Way. We are holding a pilgrimage through the Diocese culminating in an outdoor event of celebration and worship with the Archbishop of Canterbury at St Aldhelm's Head on Saturday 4th June. We invite you to join us, either for some of the walk or for the celebration itself. Sherborne Abbey is celebrating its foundation by Aldhelm in 705 and there are a number of events throughout the diocese. We hope that you will use the resources and links on this website to support your activities and tell us what you are doing as you progress in The Aldhelm Way through 2005 and beyond. Website
